Scaling Fences: Voices of Irregular African Migrants to Europe
UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa
Scaling Fences: Voices of Irregular African Migrants to Europe report presents the results of an extensive study exploring the perspectives and experiences of 1,970 individuals who migrated through irregular routes from Africa to Europe, originating from 39 African countries. Its aim is to contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between migration and development.
Studio Mnemonic worked closely with the UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa and developed and designed the visual concept, report, graphs and data visualisations, website and visual communication platform for the project.
We also developed all concept photography, plus concept and production for 6 videos and a trailer filmed in Europe and Africa.

Scaling Fences: Voices of Irregular African
Short stories, 6 X 5-10 min & Feature film, 40 min
Scaling Fences short stories is a series of short films that visualise and bring life to the numbers behind the Scaling Fences report.
Studio Mnemonic developed a strategy for the films to work for the website but also to be able to work singularly or together on social media plattforms. The main objectives were; to humanise, reflect the report, and inspire debate. The films were shot in Gambia, Côte dÌvoire, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany.
While the report took shape, the subjects grew and the final titles and subjects for the films were: Void, Pressure, Shame, The Others, Motives, and Trapped. Seemingly simple words but they each have a depth when it comes to describing the effects of migration on a personal as well as a global scale.
